Webcomic Recommendations

I could go on and on about webcomics.  I've got a bookmarks list about 3 screens long.  But I'll try to keep it to a small selection of the best.

Earthsong is perhaps my favourite webcomic.  Its highly imaginative storyline combines with expressive, interesting and vibrant artwork in a unique manga-inspired style to give something that is an excellent read.  The author, Lady Yates is one of the more social i have come across, and the forum's a great place to hang out.  Be sure to give this comic a visit, or buy a copy now that it's published.

Dominic Deegan is something of a veteran in the webcomicing world.  It's been out for years, though I came to it comparatively recently.  Add simple but expressive mostly greyscale artwork and an engaging storyline to a selection of positively groan-inducing puns (my favourite kind) and you get great work.

Inverloch

Inverloch is one of the few high-quality complete comics available on the web.  Definitely worth reading.  It will take you some time.

The Pheonix Requiem is Sarah's next project.  In its very early stages at present, and highly mysterious.  Also worth reading.

Goblins is outstanding.  The artwork and colouring are simple, and occasionally leave a little to be desired, and the comic is almost invariably late these days, but that does nothing to detract from the storyline.  Thunt is an outstanding storyteller and a master of the little details.  Occasionally fairly gory.

Twelve Dragons is fantastic.  An unusual, simple but highly expressive inked art style with occasional splashes of colour gives it visual appeal, while the storyline, already many chapters in and really only just beginning is well thought out and interesting.  Please go and read this vastly under-appreciated comic.

Flipside is really only just beginning.  There's an enormous back catalogue of old work, with a lot of interesting stories and great character development in Book 0, but the main part of the story, Book 1, is just getting into full swing.  Art-wise it's fairly traditional manga, greyscale, with some beautifully coloured pages and panels done in collaboration with another artist, and cute little chibi inter-chapter interludes.  Well worth reading, particularly Book 0.

The banner says it all really.  An oustanding steampunk world from two old masters of print comics.  The Foglios' work is outstanding, highly imaginative and amusing.  The archive is VAST, but well worth perservering on.

No banner for Buck, however.  An old print comic being re-inked and coloured for the web, Buck Godot is filled with Sci Fi staples and engaging stories.  Like Girl Genius, well worth reading.

Darths and Droids

David Morgan-Mar's Irregular Webcomic is great.  Intellectually challenging in places, consistently funny and always on time.  The archive is the biggest I've ever actually slogged through.  But it's worth doing.  Parodies reign supreme here.  Watch out for Cthulhu.

Darths and Droids is by DMM and some friends from work.  One of the best Star Wars parodies I've seen.  They even manage to make JAR-JAR likeable.  It's uncanny.

xkcd Don't let the stick figures fool you.  Xkcd is outstanding quality, one of the best.  Funny, extremely intellectually challenging, and very thought provoking.  Don't miss the ALT text - I did my first time through - or the blag (blog?) which is worth a read in and of itself.  Where else on the web could you find instructions for turning your flat into a giant ball pit alongside instructions for turning the sun into a giant death ray?
Schlock Mercenary Outstanding, and one of the true veterans of the webcomicing world.  Has updated every day (EVERY DAY) without fail for EIGHT YEARS.  Reasonably hard science fiction.  The ongoing story of Schlock, a carbosilicate amorph (i.e. animate blob of gunk with eyes) who joins a company of mercenaries in the 31st century.  outstanding imagination and a very VERY long game in plot terms, not to mention a brilliant hurricane of puns and noticeable art improvement over the years.
